COVID-19 has decimated the finances of innumerable theatre technicians, actors and support staff who work as daily wage earners, and used to get paid after each performance. Since all auditoria have been locked for the last five months, their source of income has closed. Many Bengali group-theatre artists have got together to start a venture named Saubhratitwa that identifies fellow artists in distress at this time through networking and extends financial help to them. Saubhratitwa have collected Rs 14 lakh for them so far. Over 150 urban and rural theatre practitioners not just in Kolkata but in West Bengal have received aid, medical assistance and monthly food rations for their families.
